Portsmouth
YMCA Portsmouth works with
children and young people in Portsmouth and around South East Hampshire in a variety of settings including schools, colleges and community
buildings, with the main centre of operation being at The Oasis Centre on Arundel Street.
YMCA’s
mission is:
To champion and add value to young lives by providing
experiences that challenge, enable and develop the individual.
The activities of YMCA Portsmouth build on an almost 150-year long history of YMCA work
to actively support the needs and development of children
and young people. The vision is to befriend, support, challenge
and champion the children and young people.
Youth and children's activities now take place at the Oasis Centre as well as in schools and neighbourhood venues around Portsmouth. YMCA Portsmouth work today includes:
- Children's out-of-school activities including Playschemes, After School and Breakfast Clubs and accompanied trips to Fairthorne.
- Respect Drama Project - Fun -Damental Theatre. Issue based drama workshops.
- New activities at the Oasis Centre included youth drop-ins, an arts & drama playscheme, Saturday morning club and Dads 'n' Lads project.
- The youth work team for YMCA Fairthorne Group is based at Portsmouth, delivering youth work in Portsmouth and also at locations around South East Hampshire including Wecock Fram, Havant and Gosport.
- Young people aged 16 - 24 can volunteer in their communities through the Millennium Volunteers programme which is based at YMCA Portsmouth, Gosport, Fareham, Havant, Petersfield and Chichester areas.
